South Africa coach Stuart Baxter admits he is on borrowed time following Wednesday’s 4-2 friendly defeat by Germany.
The visitors conceded three goals in the first five minutes of the second half at the Weserstadion and the manner of the defeat has convinced Baxter that his time is up.
”I have passed my expiry date,” said Baxter.
”South Africa have had 12 coaches in 11 years so realistically you can not make long-term plans.
”Germany gave us a lesson in how to win a game and it showed once again that there is a lot of work to do to build a top team for the 2010 World Cup.”
South Africa will not be at the 2006 World Cup in Germany after losing their last qualifier 3-1 to tiny Burkina Faso, ranked 91 in the Fifa rankings.
The focus is now on 2010 when they are the host nation but Englishman Baxter is likely to step down, or be fired, when the World Cup qualification campaign is concluded.
”Regardless of whether I am still here at the end of the qualification campaign I have tried to bring in some fresh blood for the 2010 World Cup,” said a resigned Baxter. – AFP
