The Express Air Services manager shot by a disgruntled employee at the Johannesburg International airport on Friday morning has died, Milpark hospital confirmed.
The man was shot in the head and chest by a 27-year-old man who had been fired after a disciplinary hearing for insubordination and intimidation of a manager at Express Air Services.
The man who shot him then shot himself dead.
The injured manager was rushed to Milpark hospital by a Netcare 911 helicopter.
Hospital spokesperson Monique Lanz confirmed his death. She said his family had asked that his name be withheld until all relatives had been informed.
The name of the sacked employee was not immediately available.
Meanwhile, crime-scene investigators and airport employees quietly milled around the cargo section of the airport.
After the man’s body was removed, the investigators and employees stood around in small groups, refusing to comment on the shooting.
The area where the shooting took place was in the perishable-cargo triangle of the company, on the opposite end of the airport’s cargo sections, away from airline passengers.
One man at the scene mentioned that colleagues of the man were extremely traumatised. He added that one person had seen the shooting and was also traumatised. He would only say that the witness had been ”taken away”. — Sapa
