Uneasy bedfellows: Sex shop near Parliament closes

The Adult World sex shop on Plein Street, Cape Town, located just opposite the buildings of South Africa’s Parliament, has been closed following complaints by the government and members of Parliament, according to the Department of Home Affairs.

Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Malusi Gigaba said on Friday that he had received ”with enthusiasm” a letter from the lawyers representing the owners of the Adult World shop, informing him of the closure of the shop.

”I warmly welcomed this move and expressed by profound appreciation at the fact that the closure of this shop demonstrates respect for the Parliament, for school children that use this street to and from school, and for the Anglican church cathedral just up the street,” he said.

”We remain steadfast in our wish to ensure that all adult shops comply with the Film and Publication Act and do not engage in illegal activities. Therefore, unexpected visits in full public glare of the media are going to continue unabated and more capacity, in terms of monitors, will be improved,” he concluded. – I-Net Bridge
