Pumas, Griffons chalk up victories

The Griffons boosted their chances of making the Currie Cup first-division semifinals with a come-from-behind 39-30 win over the Falcons at the Bosman Stadium in Brakpan on Saturday.

Trailing 21-10 at the break, the visitors turned in a superb second 40 minutes to score four tries and consign the Falcons to their first loss of the first-division campaign.

The Griffons outscored the Falcons five tries to three to earn a bonus point for their troubles and leave the Falcons empty-handed after 80 gruelling minutes.

Griffons flyhalf Andre Hough had a fine all-round game and kicked 14 points via four conversions and two penalties to help steer his team to the unlikely win.

Right wing Tienie Goosen was also a constant threat to the home team.

Pumas beat Elephants

The Pumas turned around a first-half deficit to beat the Mighty Elephants convincingly 31-20 in a Currie Cup first-division rugby fixture at the Epru Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Saturday afternoon.

The Elephants led 10-6 at half-time, but it was always evident that if the Pumas could eliminate crucial errors, they could well get the better of the home side.

So, it came as no surprise when they ran in three second-half tries to take the match away from the Elephants, who had produced a fighting performance in the first half.

Casper Steyn was the hero for the visitors as he slotted four penalties and two conversions for a personal tally of 16 points.

Elephants lock Willie Bower spent 10 minutes in the sin bin when he received a yellow card on the stroke of half-time for a professional foul.
