South African Football Association’s debt shock

The South African Football Association are in debt to the tune of R78-million, said a report in Johannesburg’s Sunday Sun newspaper over the week-end.

The figure, it is alleged, reflects the situation after the 2004/5 financial year.

Neither Danny Jordaan, who was CEO of Safa during this period, nor current Safa CEO Raymond Hack were immediately available for comment on Sunday.

The newspaper says the huge deficit is partially due to the fact that financial documents for the year show a credit of R40-million from Fifa for Bafana qualifying

for the World Cup finals. South Africa have failed to qualify for next year’s tournament in Germany.

The Sunday Sun report also claims the huge deficit takes into account the controversial R23-million awarded to Safa president Molefi Oliphant, former Safa CEO and World Cup Organising Committee CEO Danny Jordaan and World Cup Bid chairperson Irvin Khoza for their roles in helping South Africa secure the hosting of the 2010 World Cup.

Oliphant said at the time that he would not accept his R7,5m share of the hand-out. – Sapa
