Lamontville Golden Arrows beat Tembisa Classic 2-0 in a KwaZulu-Natal Castle Premiership derby played at King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday afternoon, thanks to goals by Alton Meiring and Mabhuti Khanyeza.
There was no score at the interval.
Classic were unlucky not to score as early as the 17th minute when Obina Okafor’s shot was cleared on the goal line by Billy Rantsoane, with Arrows goalkeeper Gareth Ormshaw beaten hands down.
Okafor had received the ball from Colleen Zimba.
In the 31st minute, red-hot Arrows striker Khanyeza missed a sitter after receiving an excellent pass from Thokozani ”Mzekezeke” Mshengu.
A minute later, Khanyeza wasted another chance when his shot hit the side net with only Classic’s goalkeeper, Aime Kitenge, to beat.
In the start of the second half, Arrows mentor Khabo Zondo introduced Meiring for Masixole May.
This bore good fruit for Abafana Bes’thende as Meiring opened the score sheet in the 64th minute after taking a free kick just outside the penalty box.
In search for an equaliser, Classic made double substitutions by taking out Mpho Rashete and David Mogale for Molefi ”Ace” Ntshoelengoe and Junaid Hartley respectively.
Instead of getting an equaliser, Arrows increased in the lead in the 87th minute when Khanyeza converted Mshengu’s excellent move.
This was Arrows’ first win of the season and Classic’s first loss under new management. — Sapa
