Marissa Naidoo to be buried in Benoni

Marissa Naidoo, the 10-year-old child who was kidnapped and murdered last week in Benoni, will be buried in the town on Wednesday, South African Broadcasting Corporation radio news reports.

Meanwhile, investigations have yielded no evidence that her killer worked with an accomplice, East Rand police said on Tuesday.

Spokesperson Eugene Opperman denied reports claiming Raveen Rampershad had worked with an accomplice in kidnapping Naidoo from Benoni Primary School on Thursday before suffocating her and stuffing her body in a suitcase.

He had made a call to the girl’s father demanding a ransom of R500 000.

A North Rand detective task team swooped on Rampershad at a flat in Radio City, Princess Road, Benoni, on Sunday morning. As police were about to arrest him he leapt to his death from the balcony.

Opperman denied claims that Naidoo had been found with clingfilm wrapped around her face, saying only that she had been suffocated.

He said the claim that the school had acted irresponsibly by allowing Naidoo to leave with her kidnapper, was an internal matter between parents and the school.

”Police will stop commenting on this matter from today,” said Opperman, saying it only served to further traumatise the family. – Sapa
