Bulls remain at top of the log

The Blue Bulls overcame a spirited Cheetahs side 26 -22 in Currie Cup premier division match in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

Cheetahs flyhalf Willem de Waal did not put a boot wrong when he slotted six out of six kicks at posts for a personal tally of 17 points, while Derick Hougaard bagged 16 points from four penalties and two conversions.

With 27 points, the Bulls are now well clear of their competition at the top of section X, while the Cheetahs maintain their second position in Section Y on 14 points.

Springbok trio — Victor Matfield, Danie Rossouw and substitute Bakkies Botha — dominated the set pieces and did not allow the Cheetahs the ball to attack effectively.

Centre Wynand Olivier scored the Bulls’ first try with a brilliant solo effort and then on the stroke of halftime Bok winger Bryan Habana dotted down after slipping numerous tackles.

Rayno van der Merwe replied for the home side after flanker Juan Smith, showing his backline skills, chipped the defence for Van der Merwe to fall onto. – Sapa
