Santos, Jomo Cosmos move up in Coca-Cola Cup

Santos moved into the next round on the Coca-Cola Cup at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town on Wednesday night when they beat Moroka Swallows 2-1 on penalties after the match was deadlocked at 0-0 following extra time.

Edrich Burton and Sebastian Bax converted their penalties for Santos, while Thapelo Liau netted Swallows’ only penalty.

It was Santos’s eighth draw this season.

The play from both sides was poor and once again Santos left their shooting boots behind.

In the seventh minute, Thembile Kanone had a chance to give Santos the lead but from 10m out, he lofted the ball high over the goals.

The visitors came close in the 29th minute when Lefa Tsutsulupa’s shot from 25m out skimmed the crossbar.

The visitors were unlucky in the 74th minute when a free kick from the right fell to Goodman Mazibuko, who kicked from 5m out. Wayne Roberts, however, pulled off a brilliant save, diving to his right.

Cosmos into quarterfinals

Jomo Cosmos moved into the quarterfinals of the Coca-Cola Cup on Wednesday night when they beat Silver Star 3-1 on penalties at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane after the two teams were deadlocked at 1-1 following extra time.

Stars went ahead in the 27th minute when Elvis Mashao headed the ball into Cosmos’ net from a free kick taken by Katlego Mashego from just outside the area.

Six minutes into the second half, Cosmos equalised when the Stars defenders failed to clear a corner kick, allowing midfielder Shere Lekgothwane to shoot the visitors back into the match.

With no further goals, the match went into extra time and with even the extra 30 minutes unable to produce a result, the game went to penalties.

They proved disastrous for the home team, with only Molofe Luate managing to score from the spot. Cosmos had much better form with all of Chris Katango, Clinton Sephadi and Thapelo Tshilo netting their shots. — Sapa
