Community members handed over a man to the Eldorado Park police station, south of Johannesburg, on Saturday in connection with the murder of six-year-old Ghairoenisha Michaela Lee Canchi.
Her body was found on a hill a kilometre from her home at 6am on Friday morning, after an all-night search by the police, emergency services and the community.
”We can confirm that a man has been handed over to the Eldorado police station and that investigations are still continuing. But it’s not the community who are investigating the case, the police are,” Superintendent Lungelo Dlamini said on Saturday.
”We will issue a formal statement once a person has been arrested and charged for the murder.”
On Friday, Gauteng community safety MEC Firoz Cachalia urged residents to stay calm after there was an outcry over the police’s alleged tardiness in investigating the case. – Sapa
