Court awards money to Millionaire contestant

A Prague court on Friday ruled that a TV quiz-show contestant was right when the moderator called him wrong on the Czech Republic’s version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?.

The court awarded Karel Lupomesky more than three million koruna ($125 000) in prize money plus interest for giving the answer ”century” when asked, ”What’s the name of the old Roman army division with a force of between 120 and 150 men?”.

The moderator on the TV Nova show had rejected that response, saying the correct answer was ”maniple”.

After Lupomesky sued, university experts on Roman history were called as witnesses to defend the TV station’s claim. But the plaintiff argued that both answers were technically correct.

After the verdict, Lupomesky told the Novinky news agency he will use the money to pay off debts and take a vacation.

”Truth and love have won over lies and hate,” he said. — Sapa-DPA
