Train set alight in Springs

Rail commuters had to be evacuated on Saturday when three motor coaches and three trailers were vandalised and burnt at a station in Springs, Metrorail said.

“Metrorail cannot speculate on the cause of the incident. The management will work with the South African Police Service to put an end to this criminal activity,” said Metrorail spokesperson Thandi Mlangeni.

She said the incident took place while Metrorail’s service was operating efficiently with no delays.

The commuters were transferred to another train.

East Rand police spokesperson Andy Pieke said a case of arson is being investigated.

Metrorail has asked the police to assist in stepping up its security measures on trains and at stations.

Earlier this month, commuters angry about train delays caused damage estimated at R30-million when they set fire to several coaches and two offices at Germiston station. — Sapa
