Afrikaans singer Janita Claassen died of a long illness on Monday morning, news reports said.
The popular singer had been battling cancer that affected her lungs and throat.
Radio reports said she was 58 when she died. She was recently honoured at a concert in Centurion, Pretoria.
Some of her recordings include the albums Wie Sal Weet, Die Heer Is My Herder and Wilde Aalwyn.
She had several hits over past two decades, with the first being Rolbos in 1983, and was nominated for Sarie and Artes awards. She also performed in musicals and on television programmers.
A number of her records went gold with sales of more than 25Â 000 copies.
She was diagnosed with cancer in 1995, according to music website Fantasia.co.za.
