Giant Greek kebab goes on the grill

A restaurant owner in the western Greek port of Patras on Monday began efforts to grill his way into the Guinness World Records book by making the world’s largest kebab.

Costas Dasios early on Monday began roasting a pork kebab weighing about 1 850kg on a 1,73m steel skewer, fuelled by a two-tonne natural-gas tank, Kathimerini daily reported.

Approximately 150kg of spices and 100kg of salt went into adding taste to the kebab, which is known as gyros in Greece.

The Guinness record is currently held by a restaurateur from Cyprus named Sami Eid. The kebab he made in Limassol, Cyprus, in June 2001 weighed 1 503,66kg and measured 1,51m in height.

The Patras giant kebab should be ready by Monday evening, Dasios told state television channel Net.

“The city’s poor will be the first to get a taste,” he said. — AFP
