Google sets sights on classifieds

Google is testing technology that would expand its online empire to include internet auctions and classified ads, the company said on Tuesday.

The internet search leader and stock market darling made the announcements after researchers uncovered sample web pages on the company’s internet site.

The screen shots invited people to list their own information like a used car for sale or a party-planning service on a site called Google Base.

Given Google’s ubiquitous presence on the internet and its powerful search technologies, such a service could pose a significant challenge to popular websites such as eBay and Craigslist.

In a statement, Google confirmed it was considering the development of the new service.

”We are testing new ways for content owners to easily send their content to Google,” said the company.

”We’re continually exploring new opportunities to expand our offerings, but we don’t have anything to announce at this time.” – Sapa-DPA
