Four people were killed and 11 injured in Pretoria early on Saturday when an oncoming train hit them in the chaos of a chase to apprehend suspects, police said on Saturday.
”The incident happened before six this morning,” Inspector Anton Breedt said at 10am from the scene at Wonderboom station north of the Pretoria CBD.
”Guards were trying to apprehend people, and these people got too close to the tracks, over the yellow line,” he said.
”They didn’t notice the oncoming train and it struck several people on the platform,” he said.
”Four died on the scene and 11 were admitted to hospital.”
Breedt said he could not give a full statement because the people who could say what had happened were in hospital.
”We are cleaning up the scene, and then we are going to handover to Metro Rail,” he said. – Sapa
