Aguilera’s earrings earn money for charity

A star-studded auction at a banquet in Johannesburg raised millions of rands for South African charities on Wednesday night.

A yellow Lamborghini fetched R2,5-million, and a pair of diamond earrings worn by multiple Grammy-winner Christina Aguilera went for R50 000.

A painting of a racing car, signed by formula-one 2005 world champion Fernando Alonso, brought in R32 000.

The Unite of the Stars charity gala banquet was attended by the country’s rich and famous, who saw performances from a variety of international and national artists.

They included local singers Heinz Winckler and Danny K, as well as the Soweto Gospel Choir.

Broadway star Deborah Cox, Irish boy band Westlife, Aguilera and violin prodigy Lucia Micarelli also performed, and soul diva Diana Ross ended the glitzy evening.

The banquet was part of the Altech Grand Prix Week to raise money for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, Unite against Hunger, the Topsy Foundation and St Mary’s hospital.

The proceeds of other performances this week by the stars will also go to the charities.
