The police on Tanzania’s semi-autonomous Indian Ocean Zanzibar archipelago said on Tuesday they were probing the death over the weekend of a South African tourist after a mishap at sea.
”We are still investigating the cause of the death of the tourist, however a preliminary finding shows he was not attacked,” said Zanzibar deputy police chief Kheir Khamis.
The authorities identified the man as Widthit Haribans (66) believed to be from Verulam near Durban.
Haribans, who had travelled to Zanzibar last week with his son for a holiday, died on Sunday off the Zanzibar coast shortly after fishermen pulled him aboard their vessel in a bid to rescue him from drowning, police and witnesses said. – Sapa-AFP
