Vodacom launches cellphone TV in SA

Vodacom this month launched South Africa’s first mobile TV service which is accessible by subscribers with Vodafone live! 3G cellphones, the cellphone operator announced on Thursday, adding that these users would be able to watch live TV on their cellphones.

Vodacom’s Pieter Uys described cellphone TV as an entertainment service with mass appeal and believes there will be many millions of cellphone TV viewers worldwide by 2010. Channels available to Vodacom customers include E! Entertainment, Fashion TV, Chilli TV and BBC while MTV channels and Sky News will be added.

Although 3G, or third generation technology, arrived in the country last December, South African 3G subscribers cannot make video calls across the networks as MTN Group and Vodacom are yet to effect the relevant interconnection agreements. – I-Net Bridge
