Gauteng driver caught at 219kph on highway

A man was arrested for driving at 219kph on the N3 highway in Linksfield on Sunday morning, metropolitan police said.

Ekurhuleni metropolitan police spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng said the man, driving a BMW, was arrested in an anti-speeding operation held between 6am and 10am.

”The man’s excuse was that he was in a hurry to get to the airport,” Mokheseng said.

Three others, driving a BMW, a Mercedes and a Nissan, were arrested for driving more than 200kph.

”One man’s excuse was that he was hurrying to get to the Wesbank raceway,” Mokheseng said. ”Another person said they were in a hurry to get to a meeting.”

Seven more people were arrested in the operation for driving at speeds in excess of 180kph.

The alleged speedsters were to spend the night in jail and would appear in Edenvale and Germiston magistrate’s courts on Monday. — Sapa
