The Warriors piled on the agony for the Cape Cobras as they won their Standard Bank Cup match at Paarl on Sunday.
A good comeback by the Cobras almost swung the match back in their favour, but by the end the home side remained rock bottom on the log, still seeking a victory after seven matches.
They were undone after some poor batting, which has often been their downfall this season.
Robin Peterson won the toss and elected to field first. Andrew Puttick failed again, and Justin Kreusch pinned down the batsmen.
Bowling his spell unchanged from the Swartland End, he had the miserly figures of two for 18 in his nine overs. Most of the middle of the innings belonged to the spinners, as Peterson and left-armer Shaun de Kock pegged back the scoring rate.
Peterson in particular extracted bounce and turn from the wicket, which generally played low and slow for the seamers.
The Cobras were forced to introduce substitute Gerhardus Strydom at the fall of the fourth wicket, and the left-handed Boland batsman responded by making a classy 63 off 73 balls, with just three fours to his credit.
He fell in the final over, chipping Tyron Henderson to deep square leg. Henderson also finished with the admirable figures of three for 23, ending the innings with a rare maiden over after having been on a hat-trick.
Facing a required rate of less than four runs to the over, the Warriors never allowed this to climb above five at any stage.
Carl Bradfield and Kreusch made a steady start before Charl Willoughby produce a peach of a delivery to rattle Bradfield’s stumps.
However, the seamers struggled with their line, bowling both sides of the wicket. Kreusch and Peterson continued to dominate, posting a partnership of 84 off 119 balls.
The belated introduction of left-arm spinner Con de Lange in the 28th over and some tighter bowling from Harvey after a poor start put some pressure on the batsmen. This was part of the reason for Kreusch calling for a suicidal single to De Lange and failing to regain his crease.
The Cobras were struck another blow when De Lange dislocated his left shoulder in fielding off his own bowling, and was forced to leave the field. However, Willoughby came back to dismiss Peterson with some reverse swing, and Monde Zondeki produced an excellent spell to put the result in a small measure of doubt.
The former Warriors paceman snapped up three wickets in 12 balls, but the experience of Arno Jacobs was too much for the home side as he steered his team to victory with seven balls to spare.
In four one-day matches between the teams since the introduction of the franchise system, the Warriors have won all four.
Paarl has also proved a happy hunting ground for Kreusch, as he won the man-of-the-match award for his all-round efforts, having also done so in the Warriors victory at Boland Park last summer. — Sapa
