Robbers shoot out Menlyn Park jeweller’s windows

Gunmen on Tuesday shot out the windows of a jewellery store at the Menlyn Park shopping centre in Pretoria in order to steal the merchandise.

According to a witness, robbers fired several shots just after 8pm at Arthur Kaplan’s, shattering the windows.

Shoppers ran for cover at nearby restaurants at the sound of the shots.

Police spokesperson Constable Brenda Kgalefa said officers were heading to the scene and that details would be available later.

The centre is a sprawling complex in Pretoria’s affluent eastern suburbs, featuring facilities such as a rooftop drive-in, Imax theatre and a games arcade — where there recently was a stabbing. Juan Lee Olivier (22), of Kameeldrift, died of his stab wounds.

Tuesday’s shooting incident at Menlyn was similar to one at the Bedfordview Centre outside Johannesburg on December 11, when five gunmen shot out the display window of a jeweller’s and escaped with their loot in a white BMW. — Sapa
