Police have arrested a 16-year-old youth in the KwaZulu-Natal town of Paddock in connection with the murder of teenager Kalin Jooste in nearby Margate this week, South African Broadcasting Corporation radio news reports.
The young man was arrested following a tip-off from the public, according to the report.
Jooste was stabbed to death for her cellphone in the resort town on Tuesday and has since been buried in her hometown of Carletonville.
The teenager and a friend had been walking from a nightclub in Margate, KwaZulu-Natal, in the early hours of the morning when they were accosted by two men, police said.
One of them tried to grab Jooste’s handbag and there was a struggle in which he stabbed her in the neck.
He fled, leaving the girl’s belongings scattered on the ground.
She walked a few metres and then collapsed. Her friend unsuccessfully tried to staunch the blood from the wound and Jooste died on the scene. — Sapa
