And then the rains came to the Free State

Free State farmers celebrating the rain that fell over the New Year are praying the wet weather carries on into the planting season to ease a drought that has crippled the province since November.

Free State Agricultural Union director Pieter Moller said the recent rainfall had not broken the drought, but had brought great relief to the farmers.

Between 7mm and 27mm had fallen in Edenburg, Trompsburg and Philippolis — the three areas worst affected by the drought.

”The farmers are very positive. It is growing season and the rains will immensely help for at least this month,” Moller said.

A 30 to 60% chance of rain in the area is predicted for the next two weeks.

”If the rain follows up, it will bring great relief. There will be hope for graze land and even for the dams, which are very low at the moment.”

Moller said some towns had already introduced water restrictions.

”Some towns have been without water for three days,” Moller said. ”The people are hoping that this is the start of a recovery.” – Sapa
