Potential voters who still want to register for the municipal elections, and those who want to re-register, do not have many days left to do so.
The Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) chief electoral officer, Pansy Tlakula, said there is still an opportunity for potential voters to register or re-register at their local municipal electoral officers.
”I urge voters to register or re-register as a matter of urgency and not to delay it beyond this week. They will only be able to do so until the elections are formally proclaimed in the Government Gazette, and that could be imminent,” Tlakula said.
During municipal elections, voters can only vote in the voting district in which they are registered.
In the meantime, Tlakula confirmed that targeted registration is still taking place until Thursday in selected voting districts. This is as a result of changes in ward boundaries, mostly following municipal boundary changes that were finalised in December.
She said affected voters will receive home visits from IEC officials and an information leaflet will be left for those not at home at the time.
The affected districts are in Matatiele, Umzimvubu/Mount Ayliff, Kungweni/Bronkhorstspruit, Thembisile/KwaMhalanga, Buffalo City/East London and Kgetlengriver/Koster.
Some voting stations in the relevant voting districts will also open on either Thursday or Friday in order that voters may re-register.
”These are localised campaigns and the task at hand will be completed by Friday,” Tlakula said.
The time line, detailing important events and deadlines leading up to the elections, will be issued as soon as the elections have been proclaimed. — Sapa
