Burkina Faso’s prime minister resigns

The prime minister of Burkina Faso, Paramanga Ernest Yonli, has handed in his resignation to President Blaise Compaore, the president’s office announced on Wednesday.

His resignation comes almost two months after presidential elections held on November 13.

A statement issued by the presidency said the Cabinet also stepped down under provisions of the country’s Constitution but added that the government would run current affairs until a new one has been appointed.

Yonli has a good chance of being reappointed when a new government is announced, possibly within the next few days, analysts said in Ouagadougou.

Compaore, who is 54, was reelected in November in the first round with 80,35% of the votes, in the first election where he faced committed opposition.

This time his adversaries again called the ballot an ”electoral masquerade” but decided there was no point in challenging the outcome. – Sapa-AFP
