The South Darfur police chief said on Sunday that 18 rebels had been killed and more than 50 wounded while two government troops died and nine others were wounded in a recent attack by rebels on Shiairyah town in South Darfur state.
There was no independent confirmation of the statement by police chief, Major General Abdin al-Tahir, who was quoted by the state-run Sudanese Media Centre.
He said government army troops repulsed the rebel attack whose date he did not give.
The media centre also said on Sunday that two Sudanese army soldiers had been sentenced to death in Darfur for killing a woman inside her home in Kutum town. It did not explain the circumstances of the woman’s death or say when the murder took place. – Sapa-AFP
