Sri Lanka beat Australia in first tri-series match

Sri Lanka defeated Australia by 22 runs to win the opening triangular series one-day cricket final at the Adelaide Oval on Friday.

Tillekeratne Dilshan destroyed the Australians’ hopes with four run-outs as Australia were all out for 252 off 49,1 overs in reply to Sri Lanka’s 274 for eight off their 50 overs.

Dilshan was electrifying as he flashed in from point to run out Damien Martyn for one with a deft pick-up and throw from the bowlers’ end.

He also figured in the run-outs of Australian skipper Ricky Ponting (0), Simon Katich (56) and Mike Hussey (16).

Dilshan also took the catch to dismiss James Hopes for three and made an unbeaten 26 off 20 balls in Sri Lanka’s innings.

Australia must now win Sunday’s second final at the Sydney Cricket Ground to send the series to a third match in Brisbane next Tuesday. – AFP
