New Australian rugby franchise Western Force were rocked on Sunday by the news that flyhalf Lachlan MacKay was likely to miss the rest of the Super 14 season with a serious knee injury.
A Force spokesperson said scans on Sunday had confirmed a torn medial ligament in MacKay’s right knee.
MacKay, one of the Force’s high-profile off-season recruits from the NSW Waratahs, was injured in the season-opening 25-10 loss to the ACT Brumbies in Perth on Friday.
Team medics said the injury will sideline MacKay for two to three months and leave him with little hope of playing again in the southern hemisphere provincial tournament.
