Injured Birds star grounded

Moroka Swallows’ Tsweu Mokoro, one of the shining luminaries of the current Premier Soccer League programme, is likely to miss the rest of the season with a torn ligament injury.

”I felt a little sick when I heard the news,” said Swallows MD Leon Prins on Wednesday. ”The injury is a major blow to our prospects of earning honours this season.

”Tsweu has been a revelation since he joined us this season on loan from Supersport United and we were negotiating to hold on to him on a permanent basis.”

After adding a fresh impetus of initiative and enterprise into the Swallows midfield, Mokoro was one of the Premier Soccer League ”form players” who was surprisingly overlooked for the misdirected Bafana Bafana squad who played in the African Nations Cup in Egypt.

Prins said there was better news concerning Senegalese striker Mame Niang, the other Swallows player whose success story has kept the Birds hovering on the fringe of the league championship race.

”Although Niang was cynically hacked down when we played Black Leopards two weeks ago and the injury resurfaced against Dynamos on Sunday,” added the Swallows MD, ”he has made encouraging progress this week and should be fit for the Absa Cup game when we play Dynamos again on Sunday.”

The 2m-tall Niang is Swallows’ top scorer this season with 11 goals, and the Birds have relied heavily on the Senegalese striker to add penetration to their attack. — Sapa
