Intercourse and baby oil: Zuma to tell all

Former deputy president Jacob Zuma will testify that he had consensual sex with the HIV-positive woman he is accused of raping at his home in Johannesburg last year.

Zuma’s lawyer, Kemp J Kemp, gave a brief outline to the woman in the Johannesburg High Court of what he said happened on the night of November 2.

After she and Zuma had a conversation in his study, she told Zuma that when he was finished working, he should go to her in the guest bedroom as she still wanted to speak to him.

Zuma says he went to her room and she was asleep. He woke her up and said he was ready to talk and she should go to his bedroom on the first floor.

He says she went to his room and at some stage, the woman, who was dressed in a kanga (wrap), said she was cold. She got under a duvet and started talking to him.

She then said a massage would be nice. He proceeded to massage her and baby oil was used. In the process the woman loosened the kanga. In the end he got into bed with the woman, they had a discussion and it transpired that neither of them had a condom.

Kemp said they lay in the bed kissing and touching and had intercourse that lasted for between 10 and 15 minutes.

Kemp says Zuma did ask the woman if he should ejaculate inside her, but she did not answer. Once the intercourse was finished, he went to a bathroom in his bedroom and had a shower.

The woman denied most of what Kemp put to her.

”The events happened in the way I said they happened,” she said.

On Monday, the woman told the court that she had said no to Zuma three times before the alleged rape occurred. She also said that the incident happened in the guest bedroom.

Kemp said: ”He says there was no point where you said no, and he said there was no suggestion of him restricting or holding your hands in any way.”

The woman replied: ”Again I will say that it happened they way I said.”

Kemp continued: ”He says that at no stage did you say no to him and as far as he is concerned, what happened happened with your consent.”

The woman just shook her head.

Kemp said Zuma asked her during the intercourse whether she was ”fine” and she indicated that she was. ”That’s not true,” she said.

After his shower, Zuma found her in bed and asked her how she was, and she said she was ”okay”. He asked her if she had taxi fare. She said she was going to take the bus.

The woman insisted that events happened as she had said.

The court heard that Zuma later gave her a kiss. Kemp said: ”On the Friday when he got the news that you had laid charges against him, he was quite astounded by it and he immediately suspected that there was some political intrigue.”

He tried to phone her several times to discuss the matter with her and finally got hold of her on November 10. She agreed to a meeting with him, which did not take place.

Throughout the proceedings the woman, wearing a tailored black jacket, a white shirt and blue jeans, stood in the witness box.

Court was briefly adjourned for Kemp to confirm what he had just related to the witness with Zuma. — Sapa
