Two more people have been charged with corruption and fraud along with the former speaker of the Rustenburg municipality, Elizabeth Seduke.
Daimy Maulane and Annelia Phefo appeared with Seduke and Godfrey Monaisa at the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. They all face charges of theft or corruption.
Police said Maulane and Phefo handed themselves to the police on Tuesday.
The two work from the same office as Seduke at the Rustenburg municipality. They were initially cited as witnesses at the beginning of the case in February. Maulane and Phefo were granted bail of R1 000 each.
Seduke (37) and Monaisa (28), both of Lethabong near Rustenburg, were granted bail of R1 000 each in February.
According to the charge sheet, Seduke is accused of selling cellphones allocated to councillors in the municipality. She is alleged to have stolen the cellphones and having given them to her Monaisa, who then sold them. Maulane and Phefo are alleged to have facilitated the renewal of cellphone contracts.
Police said four phones have been recovered. The value of cellphones stolen amounts to R12 000.
The case has been investigated since November 21 last year, after Independent Democrats councillor Agnes Tsamai noticed discrepancies in her account when she enquired about her cellphone bill.
She said she discovered last year that a phone belonging to a councillor who was expelled two years ago from the council was still active.
”I then questioned this and later an investigation was launched. The phone was found in Alberton.”
The case has been postponed to April 20 for further investigation. — Sapa
