After all, he gave Zuma an award as an ambassador for peace last October. And if he feels in need of some redemption, last year the Reverend Moon held an event where he was crowned, declared himself the Messiah and claimed to have redeemed the souls of Hitler and Stalin. A couple of trials and a battle for political survival should be a piece of cake in comparison …

Justice for some
At the outset of the Zuma rape trial Oom Krisjan was very grateful for the legal wisdom of the comrades from the Congress of South African Trade Unions who expounded at length about the principle of an accused person being innocent until proven guilty. So it was with some bemusement this week that the manne read comrade Willie Madisha’s pronouncements after charges against the accused in the laundry murders case were dropped owing to insufficient evidence and the fact that a ”confession” was extracted by force. ”We fought for justice, but today justice was not done,” Madisha thundered outside the court. Is this what the Engelse refer to as ”irony”?

Now we know that the gangsters in the Visdorpie are keen on firepower but apparently the city’s civil servants are partial to some hardware too. The City of Cape Town council’s 2004/05 assets audit reveals that directorates such as storm-water drains and roads, social development, and water and sanitation all own at least one firearm (perhaps to scare off the rat-tailed maggots?) while the directorate of health tops the list with eight guns. And on the list of missing items there were 13 firearms, two bullet proof vests and a number of paintings. So much for gun-free zones in the city …
