Joe Slovo residents to face vandalism charges

A case of vandalism and damage to property was opened against residents of the Joe Slovo informal settlement in Cape Town on Sunday, South African Broadcasting Corporation radio reported.

The case was opened by the Cape Town municipality after some of the residents broke into property belonging to the municipality to occupy vacant flats.

The residents allegedly cut a fence that barricaded the property along the N2 Gateway, and tore down doors of flats.

A shack fire that occurred at the settlement early on Sunday gutted about 100 residences, leaving more than 200 people homeless.

It is not known if any arrests have been made. — Sapa
