Fisher gets two more years to coach Brumbies

Laurie Fisher signed up to coach the ACT Brumbies for another two years on Wednesday, admitting the Super 14 side faced a challenging time with key players Steve Larkham and George Gregan reaching the end of their careers.

At the end of a disappointing season which saw the Brumbies finish sixth on the Super 14 table and miss out on a berth in the final rounds, Fisher said the team now had to contend with the loss of its foundation players.

”It’s an important next couple of years as we come to the end of all our first time players,” said Fisher.

Both Wallaby captain Gregan and playmaker Larkham are expected to retire following next year’s World Cup, and the Brumbies have already lost promising centre Matt Giteau to the Western Force.

But Fisher said the Brumbies still had the fundamentals needed to build for the future.

”I think what we have tried to do is establish a base style and some good platforms that we can work from,” he said.

”What we don’t want to do is make wholesale changes to the way we play next year. We just want to refine and get better.” – AFP
