Tiger Woods ended speculation that he might skip the United States Open while grieving over the death of his father, Earl, by announcing on Tuesday that he plans to tee it up at the second major of the season.
Woods’s participation in the 106th US Open, at the Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York, would end the longest layoff of his pro career. The championship begins on June 15.
Woods hasn’t competed since finishing third at the Masters on April 9 and skipped another of his usual stops on the PGA Tour when he passed on the Memorial tournament this week in Ohio.
”I think the greatest advice is to care and share,” Woods said on Tuesday while appearing at a charity event in Little Rock, Arkansas. ”My dad was so adamant about that line. He said, ‘If you care about something, you’ll share it.”’
Woods has taken time off since his father’s death on May 3.
He played a practice round on Saturday at the Winged Foot course where he was accompanied by swing coach Hank Haney.
Woods previously won US Opens at Pebble Beach in 2000 and Beth Page State Park in Farmingdale, New York four years ago. — Sapa-AFP
