Scottish champions Celtic have confirmed that they are in talks with South African international Quinton Fortune, aimed at signing the former Manchester United midfielder.
Fortune (29) was released by United at the end of the season after an injury plagued seven years at Old Trafford, but he has been recommended to Celtic by his former teammate, Roy Keane, who made the same move north of the border in January.
Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell said he would be talking to Fortune later on Friday.
”These things take a while, but Quinton was happy to come up here and have a chat and see how it goes,” he said.
Fortune was signed for United in August 1999 as a back-up for Ryan Giggs on the left wing. But the majority of his 126 appearances for the club were made at either left back or in the centre of midfield.
The South African missed all of last season with a knee injury suffered in pre-season training, having previously missed over half the 2002-03 season with a broken leg.
A move to Celtic provides the added attraction of Champions League football next season, with the Scottish champions going straight into the group stage of next season’s tournament. — AFP
