Two hundred hooligans resist banning order

About 200 hooligans ordered to hand over their passports by May 30 have failed to do so, the British Home Office announced on Monday.

The order was given to stop known troublemakers heading to Germany for the World Cup but several have ignored the order, a spokesperson for the Home Office said there was nothing to suggest those hooligans would be able to arrive in Germany.

”No banning order subjects travelled to Portugal for the 2004 [European Championships] tournament and there is no expectation banned individuals will be able to travel to Germany,” said the spokesperson.

Around 3 300 hooligans had banning orders imposed on them and 94% of those have complied by handing in their passports, accoridng to the spokesperson.

Some of those that failed to do so have already been arrested and information concerning all those still unaccounted for has been sent to port authorites in the United Kingdom and Germany.

Hooligans who try to travel to Germany face stiff penalties including up to six months in jail and a fine of up to £5 000 ($9 360). – Sapa-AFP
