Too soon to say if Sasol will be charged for 2004 blast

The Department of Labour on Wednesday said it was too early to say if Sasol would be charged with culpable homicide for the September 2004 blast at its Secunda plant.

The report on the explosion was with Minister of Labour Membathisi Mdladlana and he still had to study it, his spokesperson Mokgadi Pela said.

”It will be released soon, but it’s too soon to say what action will be taken.”

The explosion killed ten people.

Earlier the South African Broadcasting Corporation quoted an unnamed source at the labour department saying that Sasol would be charged with culpable homicide in connection with the blast.

Meanwhile, the investigation into Tuesday’s blast, which injured 19 workers at a Sasol plant in Sasolburg, was still continuing. — Sapa
