A striking security guard accused of murdering a non-striking colleague appeared briefly in Dunnottar Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, said East Rand police.
Themba Mokwebho (35) was not asked to plead and the case was postponed until June 29, when he is expected to apply for bail, said Inspector Prudence Mvelase.
Mokwebho is accused of murdering David Napo Selwane, who was recently found dead next to a railway line between Dunnottar and Sharon on the East Rand. Mokwebho was arrested on Tuesday.
A bail application is expected to be brought in the same court on the same day by Abel Moleleki (37), another striking guard accused of Selwane’s murder. He was arrested on June 16.
Police said on Wednesday that they were closing in on a gang of 12 to 15 striking guards thought to be behind the deaths of 25 of their non-striking colleagues since the end of March.
The gang, operating only in the Springs area, was also being held responsible for the intimidation, assault and robbery of working guards. — Sapa
