Armed man shot dead in another Jo’burg shoot-out

An armed man was killed and a police reservist wounded in another shoot-out between police and men who allegedly held up two fast food outlets in Fordsburg, police said on Wednesday. This follows a shoot-out in Jeppestown on Sunday in which four police officers and eight susepcts were killed.

”Around 8.30pm armed robbers held up a Steers in Mint Road, Fordsburg, and Jamo’s Take Aways on the same street, of an undisclosed amount of cash,” metro police Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

Police spokesperson Captain Schalk Bornman said the gang fled in a white Nissan bakkie. Police spotted the vehicle in Main Reef Road near Crown Mines and gave chase.

Bornman said a shoot-out ensued during the chase and a 26-year-old constable was shot in the right shoulder. During the pursuit the driver crashed the van into a

wall on Main Reef Road in Newtown.

The driver died from the impact, and one suspect was injured and taken to hospital under police guard.

The other suspects jumped off the bakkie and tried to run away, but were apprehended and arrested.

Police recovered a 9mm pistol, a semi-automatic rifle, the stolen money and four cellphones. The three suspects would appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court soon.

The injured police officer was discharged from hospital after being treated. – Sapa
