A baby was critically injured when her father tried to attack her mother with an axe at Naboomspruit on Thursday, Limpopo police said.
The baby was rushed to Mokopane hospital and later transferred to Polokwane hospital in a critical condition, said Captain Gabashane Moseki.
”She is stable and fully conscious but she’s on oxygen,” said Limpopo health department spokesperson Phuti Seloba.
”Head injuries are very serious injuries. There might complications.”
Moseki said a 27-year-old man handed himself over to police in Naboomspruit at about 3.30am.
The incident took place at Phomolong Section 1.
”It’s alleged that the suspect and his 23-year-old girlfriend had an argument this morning and, while arguing, the suspect took an axe and tried to chop his girlfriend with it.
”He mistakenly chopped his own daughter on the head with the axe.”
The mother was not injured.
The suspect will appear in the Naboomspruit Magistrate’s Court on Friday on charges of attempted murder. — Sapa
