Scorpions swoop on international drug syndicate

The Scorpions have in the past several hours arrested five people suspected of being part of an international drug syndicate and also seized drugs with a street value of over R250-million.

The five people — aged between 35 and 70 — were arrested following an undercover operation that led investigators to a self-storage facility in Alberton, south-east of Johannesburg, the National Prosecuting Authority said in a statement.

Three of the accused were arrested at the storage facility, where a well-equipped factory for packaging and the concealment of drugs was discovered. Investigators seized hashish and cannabis believed to be destined for the overseas market.

The five accused will appear in court on July 13 for a formal bail application.

Investigations are continuing and more arrests are expected soon, the NPA said. — I-Net Bridge
