If there’s one thing we expect from the Volvo brand, it’s safety. Volvo has successfully entrenched its core value even to the point where one would have to admit that it sometimes comes across as rather boring and one-tracked.
But that’s not a bad thing because it’s a great foundation to build from and that’s exactly what it has done very consistently over the years.
So when I got behind the wheel of the upgraded S60 D5, I knew I would be safe and comfortable, but I didn’t expect the new diesel engines to be quite as enthusiastic as they are.
The new engines offer more power, are more fuel-efficient and, most importantly, you will not pay a cent more for the upgrade.
Of course, given the fact that you’ve got more power and torque on tap means that you will only appreciate the new turbo-diesel engine on the open road.
The six-speed manual proved to be an effortless cruiser, but the in-gear acceleration is what sets it apart from other sedans in this class. In sixth gear, I could put my foot down on the accelerator and there was a distinct surge — not the sort of surge that would blow your hair back, but enough for you to overtake confidently at high speeds without thinking about dropping down a gear for the extra vooma you normally need to overtake.
The dynamic stability and traction control make the overall ride smooth and the car handles even B-roads comfortably.
Like all new generation diesel engines, the D5 is quieter and the technical changes, such as the fact that it’s all-aluminium and therefore lighter in weight adds to its fuel efficiency.
The S60 seats five comfortably, has ample luggage space and has quite a few impressive standard features. The most notable of these is the laminated windows. At the recent launch, motoring journalists were shown a video clip where a guy with a crowbar had to hit a laminated window four times before the glass gave in. Considering the high number of smash and grab incidents in South Africa, we should all think of investing in this clever option to make it that much harder for the common thug to make a dishonest living.
Other features include air conditioning, electric windows and mirrors and cruise control while safety features include an anti-lock braking system (ABS), six airbags, a whiplash protection system and a side impact protection system.
The S60 comes with 20 000km service intervals with a 10 000km oil change — all of which are taken care of with Volvo’s five-year/100 000km standard maintenance plan.
