Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) President Willie Madisha on Friday vowed that there will be regular protest action at the Israeli embassy in Pretoria.
”We want to tell the [Israeli] ambassador that we’ll march every day if needed until he goes home,” Madisha told about 1 000 protesters outside the embassy. He also called on the South African government to impose sanctions on Israel and recall its ambassador.
The protesters, made up mostly of members of the Muslim community, waved Hezbollah, Lebanese and Palestinian flags and called on Israel to stop its military strikes against Palestine and Lebanon.
Several carried bloodied baby dolls with posters bearing slogans asking Israel to ”stop killing our children”.
Slogans on other posters accused the United States and Israel of being ”the mother of all terrorists”.
Friday’s march, organised by the Palestinian Solidarity Committee, Cosatu and the South African Council of Churches was the second this week to the embassy.
On Thursday the African National Congress Youth League also marched to the embassy. Organisers promised more protest action countrywide next week. — Sapa
