Ekurhuleni police arrest alleged contract killers

Two men believed to have been part of a contract murder of a 36-year-old woman at the Germiston taxi rank in January were arrested after a tip-off on Wednesday, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

Inspector Jimmy Maboko said two other men believed to have been involved in the murder are still at large.

”The crime intelligence unit followed a tip-off to the Nguni hostel in Vosloorus, and two men aged 20 and 37 were arrested at 7.30pm,” he said.

The men are alleged to have shot the woman 15 times. They were allegedly paid R15 000 for the murder. ”One of them told police they had been hired by the woman’s stepson to execute the murder.”

Maboko said on the day of the murder, four men followed the woman while she drove from the Germiston taxi rank, east of Johannesburg, towards an intersection and gunned her down as soon as she stopped.

”Surprisingly, one of the arrested men told us he was on bail following his arrest on Sunday,” he said. ”He had been arrested for hijacking a white bakkie, but we still have to establish that with the SAPS [South African Police Service].”

The men are expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Friday on a charge of murder. Until then, they will remain in custody. — Sapa
