Cosatu leaders mum on reports of strife

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) was mum on Monday morning about weekend media reports that its president and general secretary were ”at war”.

Cosatu president Willie Madisha refused to comment on the reported strife between him and general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi.

”You will have to pardon me for this, but I’m not going to respond [to the allegations],” Madisha said.

”No comment,” said Cosatu spokesperson Patrick Craven.

City Press reported over the weekend that Madisha and Vavi were ”at war” with each other and barely speaking.

The rift has been caused by claims that Vavi had abused Cosatu resources for the benefit of a woman with whom he was apparently involved.

He allegedly used a Cosatu credit card to hire expensive cars for the woman. He had also allegedly taken her along on a number of overseas trips at Cosatu’s expense.

According to reports, Madisha is investigating the claims and recently informed Cosatu’s national office bearers about the probe.

Over the weekend, Vavi denied knowing about the investigation. He said the allegations are linked to the Cosatu national congress, due to be held in September. He also said it involves the future political direction of the federation.

Both Vavi and Madisha are available for re-election at the congress, which will be held in Midrand. — Sapa
