State files responding papers in Zuma trial

The state will file about 500 pages of papers in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Monday evening in response to submissions by Jacob Zuma in his corruption trial.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Makhosini Nkosi said that seven senior current and former officials had made affidavits on behalf of the state in the corruption case against the former deputy president.

”The deponents are the National Director of Public Prosecutions and head of the NPA, advocate Vusi Pikoli, his predecessor Mr Bulelani Ngcuka, former justice minister Dr Penuell Maduna, current head of the Directorate of Special Operations [Scorpions] advocate Leonard McCarthy, advocates Billy Downer SC and Anton Steynberg and Scorpions investigator Johan du Plooy,” said Nkosi.

”The affidavits, amounting to approximately 500 pages, deal exhaustively with allegations made by Mr Zuma and the other accused in their papers which were filed two weeks ago.”

Downer said the papers would be filed on Monday evening.

Nkosi said the NPA had decided not to issue any of the affidavits outside the court process in deference to the court, as Judge Herbert Msimang had indicated that the court would not issue the papers to the public until he had studied them.

Nkosi said the NPA would not comment further.

Earlier Nkosi said the state would react to calls by defence lawyers for a permanent stay of prosecution or for the case to be struck off the roll.
