Weddings on hold on paradise island

Partners wanting to tie the knot on the Thai paradise island of Phuket will have to wait a while or find another venue after the main city ran out of marriage certificates, officials said on Tuesday.

An official from Muang Phuket registration department said it used its last certificate two weeks ago and has since been unable to wed any couples.

”I have no idea why the central registration department has not sent them yet. It may have production problems or maybe they are changing to an online system,” she said.

The official said that each month more than 100 people get married in Phuket city, the main town on the popular Andaman island.

Most of them are tourists seeking a dream island wedding and beachside honeymoon, but local couples have also been affected by the document shortage.

The popularity of Phuket as a marriage venue has also caused the nearby town of Thalang to run out of certificates, while other towns on the island have only a handful of forms left.

An official from the Department of Local Administration in Bangkok said the shortage of certificates is caused by a delay in the production process. — Sapa-AFP
