Case against former Bok postponed to October

Former provincial and Springbok rugby player James Dalton will go on trial on October 12 after the case against him was postponed by the Hatfield Community Court in Pretoria on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old former hooker is accused of malicious damage to property and discharging a firearm in public.

According to the charge sheet, Dalton, who resides in Silver Lakes, Pretoria, fired five shots with a pistol at a vehicle near Menlyn Park on December 16 last year.

Dalton handed himself over to the Brooklyn police in February 2006 after hearing he was wanted for questioning. He was then arrested and later released on warning.

On Tuesday the state prosecutor requested a postponement, saying the docket had arrived at court late that day. She did not have time to read the docket or consult with the witnesses.

The case was postponed to October and Magistrate Dreyer van der Merwe marked it as preferential. — Sapa
